Beckham's Story

On Friday, April 29th, Beckham had an optometrist appointment for what we thought were allergies. The optometrist found hemorrhaging behind his right eye along with extremely high eye pressure. He was referred to and saw an ophthalmologist the following Monday, May 2nd. On Thursday May 5th, the day before his 3rd birthday, Beckham had eye surgery and was diagnosed with Coats' Disease. After surgery, we learned his retina was almost completely detached and vision is limited to only light in his right eye. Beckham has another eye surgery scheduled for June, and additional surgeries are expected in the future. At this point, the main goal of his doctors is to retain what vision Beckham has remaining to avoid complete blindness in his right eye.

In less than a week, our lives were altered. While we received an answer as to what was causing the extreme eye pressure and hemorrhaging, the answer left us with many new unanswered questions. As it stands today, he likely will not regain vision in his right eye. We are thankful Beckham's left eye doesn't appear to be impacted and are hopeful for a cure for his right eye in the future.

Just a small donation will go a long way to helping me meet my goal for the 2022 Cure Coats' 5K.

About Coats' Disease and the Cure Coats' 5K

The annual Cure Coats’ 5K Run/Walk raises money to fund research for a cure for Coats’ Disease. Coats’ Disease is a rare eye disease that causes leakage of the blood vessels behind the retina, resulting in swelling, retinal detachment, vision loss, blindness, and sometimes, even the loss of the eye. The majority of patients are diagnosed as children, and often too late for early intervention to prevent vision loss. While research has improved treatments, there is still no cure. Events like the Cure Coats’ 5K are key to funding the breakthrough research so desperately needed.

For those interested in participating in the 5K, the In-Person Cure Coats’ 5K Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 9:00 AM at the Sierra Point Marina in Brisbane, CA. For those not in the Brisbane area, the Virtual 5K is a great way to support the event from wherever you live! Complete the 5K on your own time, between June 18-24, and however you'd like - run, walk, swim, golf, bike - you choose your own activity! To register, please visit: https://bit.ly/2022CureCoats5K.
